Making Christmas

This year, however, with Dad 70 lbs lighter from his hospitalizations and rigorous diabetic diet, and me 50 lbs lighter--yes, 50; yes, I had that much to lose--there's going to be a surplus of krumkake stock. And frankly, I'm nervous about baking them at all. It's like asking the alchoholic in the group to stay sober and tend the bar for guests.
Or: it's a fun little challenge. What attitude will she ultimately assume? Hard to say.
I rarely feel the holiday shopping mania. I love to give gifts, but I also love not to lose sleep over bills. My shopping was done a month ago.
My mania is everything else. The baking--most of which (krumkake notwithstanding) turns out horribly, and yet I keep trying. Visions of sugarplums, etc. The wrapping--the ribbons and the frills and the candy canes stuck on in weird places by the kids. The decorating--the evergreen candle we got years ago and love too much to burn; the nativity scene--the little figures acting out a moment we don't even really believe in, but still feel symbolically and deeply. I love the smell of the wreath, which hangs on my back door because the sun hits that side of the house most of all, and bakes the wreath and fills the house with the scent of it.
Most of all I love the funky ornaments--the fragile, glass heart I bought the month I knew I was pregnant: my little totem of good luck--my little secret--my private acknowledgement that I loved that kid and I was changing, even though I still looked like the same caustic, dedicated single my friends and family knew and loved. The bell that a street vendor in Calcutta gave me the day I left with Liam: "Don't forget your country," he'd intoned seriously to the bewildered kid. "Don't forget who you are." The Li Bien peace doves that Pier One sells every year and I buy up, and give away, and really mean it--really wish peace, really send love. The dancing elephants and feathery ballerinas, the school projects and baby photos--the bizarre little things the kids have seized upon over the years. Some people would go for the birth certificates if the house was burning down. I'd go for the Christmas decorations.
I love every crazy minute of it.
What's your favorite thing? I want to know.

aww What a warm and wonderful post.
I LOVED this. I had this whole heated, cranky post to put on my blog today...but now I think I'll save it for another day. This feels like a much better topic.
MY favorite tradition: Since I was a little girl we would go to my blind Aunt Edie's house on Christmas Eve. (Aunt Edie is now 87..and we are still doing this.) She plays the organ and we all sing Christmas carols. We have specific songs that we read off of very old song sheets. We start with something merry like Deck the Halls...in the middle we get more serious with Silent Night...and our last song is ALWAYS The 12 Days of Christmas...with each of us taking a different part. After an hour or so, we pile into cars, someone stops and picks up vats of take out Chinese food from a litle hole-in-the-wall Chinese food restaurant, the rest of us drive around looking at Christmas lights and sucking on Candy Canes with Aunt Edie....who squeals over their beauty even though she can't see...and then we proceed to my Mom and Dad's home for the take out Chinese feast. The kids all eat in the family room....and the adults all sit together in the kitchen laughing, and raving over this year's usually spectacular tasting Chinese food menu items. When none of us can eat another bite...at the adult table we pass around the fortune cookies...and read them outloud to each other, ending each fortune with the words "In Bed" which cracks everyone up. There are three generations of family at the adult table. The 4th generation has just as much fun with each other in the "kid room" eating and watching movies and enjoying each other.
One year a few Christmas' ago, I decided I was only going to do the tree. But, to get to the ornaments, I had to rummage through everything else.
As I took out this, I had to put it out. And so on, and so on.
I have so many favorites, it's hard to say just one.
My favorite would be how the house looks and smells once it's done.
I'm really going to miss that this year.

My favorite part of the Holidays is the music and the decorations. I love how my house smells after having all my candles lit, the fireplace going and a great glass of wine.
For me this year, it is the excitement on Kiran's face everytime we wrap a gift, talk about Santa or sing songs. The kid is loving this holiday.
Congratulations on hitting 50 so quickly!!! Have you made your goal? I was 5 pounds short and need to get back on track one of these days.

christmas has always been a big deal for me...i go all out with decorations...i'm a little behind schedule this year, but it will all fall into place, i know it will...i always put lights on my bushes outside but this year the snow came early so no lights out front...i did manage to get some up in the backyard...
i've been collecting my tree ornaments for the past 25 years and have some really cool and amazing things from all over the world...i have a set of 4 monkies (one for each of us) and every year i'd hide them in the tree and the kids would have to find them...
i've been doing a cookie exchange with my girlfriends for the last 10 years or so...these are some real over achieving martha type women and if they don't like your cookies they won't ask you back...i used to be so worried i'd get the boot but finally i realized i guess i do bake some cool cookies...
i used to have big crowds on christmas eve but now it is just us 4 and my mom and the 3 golden dogs, and we have a nice dinner in the dining room by candle light...the kids miss the big parties but my hubby and i really appreciate the peacefulness of just us...
i'm not a big shopper...usually every year i'd start in the summer or early fall and knit stuff or come up with some other hand made goodies...not this year tho...but i'll come up with something...
wow inger...sorry for the rambling comment, but i really loved your post and it really got me thinking...
love and joy to you, sweetie...
peacemas...
p.s. -- we need to talk re: those 50 lbs...details, i need details...was it all weight watchers? how did you do that so fast?
OH That was such a sweet post. I think my favorite part of the season is the music and cards.
Maybe it is just because we listen to it only 1 month out of the year, but I love Christmas music. It always puts me in a good mood.
Then there are the Christmas cards. I think Christmas cards are a way for people to connect who might not have otherwise. I just got a Christmas card today from an old friend that I've been thinking about alot lately, but haven't spoken to in a long time. So after getting the card, I gave her a call to catch up and we are getting together over the holidays.
bolinhos de bacalhau! toucinho do ceu! pasteis de nata! go see!
