A Cedar-Chest Eating Area By Any Other Name...

This is the most comforting room in my house. In the dining room there are lots of things, like a coat rack, a mirror, and a table, of course. On one wall there's shelves all the way to the ceiling, and there are pictures, books, wine glasses, Liam's elephant collection, and many other things. Behind the table there's a buffet where Mom hides the Christmas presents, important papers, and dishes for special occasions. When I do my homework here I feel happy because I can smell the pretty flowers that Mom got for her birthday, and I can hear NPR in the kitchen. (My Dad works for NPR.) The room is so colorful. The walls are the color of a Halloween pumpkin, and when the sun shines through the stained glass the room lights up like a rainbow, and the wood floor gets so warm and cozy. The table cloth came from India with Mom when she brought Liam home, so it's special. The best thing of all is that when I'm done with my homework I can have a piece of Mom's birthday cake, and I don't even have to get up!
____________

Maisie's handiwork--tonight's homework. I have to keep reminding myself that kids don't really need a lot to build a rich catalog of childhood memories and treasures. I look around and see no space, and try not to run comparisons with the neighbors and their mansions. She looks around and sees home. That's nice, isn't it?

Girl, she is a writer just like her mommy. Home is where the heart is and shouldn't be measured by material things. Maisie is a lucky girl to have you for a mommy. Now, when do Kiran and I get to see the most comforting room in your house? I am thinking a few glasses (or bottles) of wine in that room sounds delightful........

holy cow i was shocked at the end when it turned out to be maisie's writing...it's so your voice...

and here are some words i live by...and have for a long long time, long before they were turned into a cheesy song: it's not about getting what you want, it's about wanting what you've got...

your home is as warm and lovely as you are, inger...

peace...

Sometimes we all just need to see things through a child's eyes.

Your daughter is a very talented writer.

You caught me off guard - I wouldn't have guessed it was Maisie writing. She inhertited her Mom's talent!

Doesn't it feel great to know that she feels like this - she will remember this feeling for a lifetime!

Firstly, Maisie is an incredible writer, but you knew that! Secondly, I know this will sound odd, but when I was cleaning my house this week I thought of you. I was thinking that you would love my cedar chest and furniture that is older, warmer and has a story to tell. I don't know why. I just thought of you that way.

how old is Maisie? That is really good writing, but I thought you wrote it at first. I like the lighting in the room.

I am awed by this post. She is indeed a writer like her talented Mom. You are right to say that children catalog their own memories and cherished moments and things in their own way. What a treasure this is from her to you, and from you to us!

I loved this! The photo, the description (which I, too, didn't realize was Maisie's writing,) your comments, "She looks around and sees home." So nice.
