Walter and Sid

It's going to be hot today; mid-90s, and humid. Every year I wonder how I'll survive another August. And every year I do, or have. So far.

There's a huge maple tree right outside my window--yawning up into the sky higher than I can see, from here. The trunk at the base is enormous; it'd take three of us joining hands to encircle it. On this side of the trunk there are peculiar knots in the tree, and the bark twists around them, and I swear you can see faces. One of them is laughing--a wide-open mouth, head thrown back. One of them disapproves. Of something. One looks off to the side, above the fray. The kids have named this tree Walter. They're too short to get the approbation in the eye from the disgruntled one. I haven't told them he's there; it's my little secret.

The vet told me that Sidney's too fat. I tell her he's just big boned. She doesn't even respond. He's a tiger--an outdoor cat with fierce shoulders and six fingers on his front paws; he could take down a fox. If he's fat, he's not getting that way on what he eats here. He's indulging elsewhere, no doubt in a natural selection kind of way. It's hard to imagine him doing that, though; I know he loves to bat around a chipmunk now and then, but when they stop running he loses interest. Hmm.

It's Tuesday, and I have a ton of work to do, and I'm sitting here writing about my tree and my cat. This is also, perhaps not incidentally, day 3 of my no-caffeine kick. I swear, if the fog doesn't lift by noon I'm downing a case of diet Dr. Pepper.

What on earth induced you to give up caffiene? That is a very serious and frivolous and damned frightening thing to do.. were you recently hit on the head by an unidentifed flying baffle?
odd that my own diet Dr Pepper sits next to my monitor.. ( swear!)
I would die without coffee.. good, strong coffee loaded with caffine and a little 1%

My son lives in Atlanta.. midtown..
( in a pink house) I don't like Atlanta much.. hot.. and the energy there.. well.. it is city energy after all. My son was robbed at gunpoint one time years ago.. he only had 10$ fortunately it was ten more than the guy with the gun had.
shall we both throw caution to the winds and visit Atlanta at the same time someday and meet up at Margaret Mitchell house, then retire to The FLying Biscuit for food, and then maybe the Highlander for a Guinness?
I will if you will! :)

My sister always says "I hate my life!" sigh.. her life is different from your sisters, but hating it? I certainly don't hate mine.. but I do yearn for something more..

Cherished is something i was once.. for a moment in time.. it was good..
I will tell you sometime ..

I love old trees.. willows being my favorite.. but Apple trees are right up there.. when I was a child my "Safe" place was in the branches of an apple tree ..

Missed you yesterday. hope she appreciated your help..

hug your tree from me.. and sit quietly beneath.. watch for this fellow

and his friends.. and you will know
to ask him what the enchantment of the tree is.... one should know..

Hi Inger,

I have begun to call myself "toaster boy" because I swear I live and sleep in a toaster oven. The freezer Isle of the grocery store has become a destination that I now look forward too.

"it's my little secret." :) there is a part of you here I understand so well.

Caffeine has my number. I am much better without it. but somehow it finds its way back everytime.

take care Inger

Trees have always amazed me. The one you have sounds wonderful.

Not sure where I heard this story from, (and not sure if anyone else has ever heard it), but it's always stuck with me every time I see a bare tree... Something about that trees are stuck in the ground upside down and what we see are actually the roots. Has anyone else ever heard this story? I'm thinking it might have been from the bible or something. Of course, I could be completely wrong :)

Great post, Inger!

I had a cat once that would capture the Arizona equivalent of a chipmunk, bring it into the bathroom, and release it into the tub where it would run around helplessly until he was excited enough to kill it.

Imagine my surprise when I'd get ready to take a shower--and find bloody streaks, bits of fur, and (usually) the large intestine left behind. Or sometimes the last inch or so of a tail, looking pretty forlorn. Ha.

P.S. Good on ya for dropping caffeine, but expect headaches and fogginess for awhile. Try a little decaf once and again for the smidgeon of caffeine left in it, and that will help.

I personally make a pot of coffee with 3 scoops of decaf and 1 scoop of regular coffee. Works pretty well.
