On human geography

We had a party here last night for my youngest sister, Judith, who is driving today with her husband and daughter and menagerie of pets to his new job and their new home in Atlanta. Great party; we do throw great parties. 40 people, all of them laughing.

At midnight the guests were gone, and my mother and sister were sobbing into each other's arms in the driveway beside the packed car. Like a movie. My kids kept angling around them, fascinated and alarmed by the tears and sounds. And then, of course, the two of them joined in. No pretty crying, but full-throated, screaming sobs. This morning they're still subdued. I keep telling them that, practically speaking, Atlanta's not all that much farther than New Jersey--that we'll probably see them all just as much as we always have. But that's not exactly so, of course. And anyway, now and then the human experience offers up an occasion to purge accumulated reservoirs of sorrow, and I think all we can do is stand aside.

Bon voyage, Jujy, and happy new life.

Atlanta has lots of places to explore, and lots of things to do.. If Judith is a city girl, she should like it well enough..

I find that flights to Atlanta are pretty reasonable most of the time.. So I hope that it is true that you can see each other fairly often..

It would be a mighty long drive.. I wish them well in their way..

As for "full-throated, screaming sobs" I think I understand that.. when, after long treatment and long years of "Stuff" building up in mylife.. the day I found out that my mom had only weeks to live.. I did that.. couldn't stop.. scared my kids.. but it was as you say.. an occasion to purge accumulated reservoirs of sorrow.. maybe we should do it more often?

I find that I have lace curtains in several rooms.. must be the Irish in me or something.. as It is not soemthing that I set out to do.. it just happened..

glad you like them... Morgan presented me with an opportunity to play, and we did, and had fun :)

Hope you are having some fun too, in these the tag end days of summer vacation!

Always hard when change happens. Like you said, the trip shouldn't be so bad...even better when airfares run specials.

I love life's road bumps.

This is but a minor one, as one who has kept it moving for years, knows.

Glad it was a fun party...and hope the weekend is delightful.

My first job out of college was in Atlanta. I only lasted around 8 months and then headed back to the Chicagoland area. Maybe your sister will be back soon as well.

Inger,

I found this on the Huffington Post Blog and thought you might find it funny. . . seeing how you feel about W. I think it's brilliant.
