The Kite Runner

I'm late to all the best-sellers; I lose interest in them when everybody else is reading them. Isn't that obtuse??

So I just finished this one, after a few months of not reading much of anything at all, and it hit me like Interpreter of Maladies did: I'm haunted by the characters, confused by and stuck on them. What a beautiful, terrible tale.

If you haven't read it, it's the story of a boy in Afghanistan back in the good old days, before the Taliban. It's told through the lenses of his key relationships: with his father, with his servant/friend, with a certain mentor, with a certain bully. I won't give it away--though I'm probably the last person on the planet to read it.

But at the heart of it is an epic, shattering betrayal; the boy--Amir--is weak, and flawed. He spends his life trying to overcome it. And he's sympathetic, in the long-run. But tell me this: why on earth did Hassan forgive him? Why the persistent smile--the undying affection? Is it beauty, or is it brokenness? This is how I know it's fiction; normal human creatures don't behave like that. Do they? I'm asking you.

could describe me, too..

I am not much of a best-seller reader.. i sort of meander through books reading everything from Harry Potter to Dickens to Dr Shoen , Alice WAlker..Gabaldon.. Koontz now and then to Mayans and Druids and fantasy and blah blah with best-sellers finding ther way in as the mood strikes..

I finally read The Secret Life of Bees not long ago and it found a place in my heart ..

I am always reading something...

this book of yours sounds good .. I am currently reading The Daughters of Joy by Chopra

We have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson ... comes to my mind often.. I loved it years ago.. still read it now and then..

I will add yours to my list of things to put on my stack of books

hope there is magic in your day!

I Loved the Kite Runner! Excellent book.

If you need a suggestion for your next favorite read..try Middlesex.

You won't be disappointed.

Hi Inger,

I read quit a bit, but never the current best sellers. I have friends that are the same way. If it is obtuse, were all in it together.

"is it Beauty, or is it Brokenness?" what a thought provoking statement. It may be possible? I am not sure so I will have to read the book now.

Take care

"The Kite Runner" was a powerful read. Along a similar line, "The Lipstick Jihad" was just recommended to me. Might want to check that one out.
