Sideways
I saw Sideways last night--bought it at the grocery store. It would be almost impossible to explain it to someone, but I can't get it out of my head. Miles telling Maya about the delicacy of pinot grapes--and you know he's talking about himself, and so does she, but you can't tell if he knows--or: of course he knows--that's the whole point: grapes are like people, without all the uncomfortable qualities of speech and mannerism and appearance. He's apologizing for himself. He's begging her to see past him to the real him. Then she's telling him that wine is alive--that it's different every day, that it keeps getting better unless you keep it in the bottle too long: that's when it starts to break down. And his beautiful ex--you want to dislike her but she's adorable--and her expensive car and successful salesman husband, and her baby. Snap--he gets it. Bottle opened. Off to Maya's house, and wearing the first color we've ever seen him wearing. I was so happy!
And stealing back the wallet for his maniac friend--oh my God, that was so funny!--the fat guy chasing them down the street, his little penis flailing. Penises are funny looking. And the indulgences of friendship--ach, a beautiful movie.
